What to Expect from Your First Chiropractor Visit at RXN Performance
If you have never been to a chiropractor before, or your previous experiences were rushed insurance-driven visits, the first appointment at RXN Performance is going to feel different. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises.
Before you arrive
You will receive a short intake form to complete before your visit. It covers your health history, any current pain or limitations, what you are trying to get back to doing, and prior treatment you have had. Filling it out in advance lets us spend the actual appointment on you, not paperwork.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes you can move in. Gym clothes are perfect — athletic shorts or leggings, a tee shirt or tank top. If you are coming straight from work and need a place to change, the front desk at Switch Fitness can help.
The first 10 minutes: conversation
Dr. Ryan starts every first visit with a real conversation. What is bothering you, what you have already tried, how it is limiting you, and what success looks like for you. This is not a script — it is how we figure out whether RXN is even the right fit for what you are dealing with.
The next 20-30 minutes: movement and assessment
From there, Dr. Ryan moves into the physical assessment. This typically includes:
- A movement screen — watching how you squat, hinge, lunge, and move through fundamental patterns under low load
- Range-of-motion testing on the joints relevant to your issue
- Strength testing of key stabilizers (deep core, glutes, scapular controllers, rotator cuff if relevant)
- Orthopedic testing specific to your case
- Neurological screening if any nerve-related symptoms are present
This is the part that is often skipped in 10-minute chiropractic visits. Without it, treatment becomes guesswork.
The next 15-20 minutes: treatment
Once Dr. Ryan understands what is going on, the rest of the hour is treatment. Depending on what your assessment showed, this typically combines:
- Manual therapy — adjustments where appropriate, soft-tissue work on restricted areas
- Movement-based corrective exercises specific to what your assessment revealed
- Hands-on cueing to help you feel proper movement patterns
The last 5 minutes: plan
You leave with a clear plan. That includes: what we think is actually driving your issue, what we are going to do about it, a realistic timeline for what improvement looks like, what to do between sessions, and how often we recommend coming in for the first few weeks. You will also get the financial picture so there are no surprises.
Will I leave feeling better immediately?
Often yes, but not always — and that is normal. Some patients feel meaningful relief in the first session. Others feel a bit sore the day after as the body adjusts to the work, and then better. A few do not feel a big change in the first session but improve steadily over the next 2-4 visits. We will set expectations honestly so you know what to look for.
What if RXN is not the right fit?
If it is not, Dr. Ryan will tell you and help direct you to the right care — whether that is a PT, an orthopedic specialist, a sports medicine physician, or somewhere else. We are not interested in keeping patients who would be better served elsewhere.
