Functional Movement Screen in Dallas
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a standardized assessment that grades how you move through seven fundamental patterns. It is one of the most widely used screens in sports medicine because it gives a clear, repeatable score of where your movement is strong and where it breaks down. At RXN Performance in Uptown Dallas, the FMS is part of our movement assessment offering.
What is the Functional Movement Screen?
The FMS is a seven-test screen developed by Gray Cook and Lee Burton, designed to identify movement asymmetries and limitations before they cause injury. It is widely used in professional sports, the military, and performance settings because the score has been shown to correlate with injury risk and movement efficiency.
What gets tested?
- Deep Squat — full-body mobility and stability through a squat pattern
- Hurdle Step — single-leg stability and stride mechanics
- In-Line Lunge — split-stance stability and hip/ankle mobility
- Shoulder Mobility — reciprocal shoulder range of motion
- Active Straight Leg Raise — hamstring length and core control
- Trunk Stability Push-Up — anterior core control under load
- Rotary Stability — multi-planar core control and coordination
Who benefits from the FMS?
The FMS is especially useful for athletes preparing for a season, anyone returning to training after a layoff, lifters or runners with recurring issues they cannot pin down, and active adults who want a clear baseline of how their body moves. The score also gives us a way to re-test progress over time.
What happens after the screen?
You leave with your composite FMS score, a breakdown of which patterns scored well and which need work, and a short corrective routine targeted at your specific limitations. If you want ongoing care, we build out a treatment plan from there. If you just wanted the screen and the routine to work on independently, that is fine too.
